Gulzar, born on August 18, 1936, in Deena (now in Pakistan), is a poet at heart, renowned for his sensitive and lyrical style in both literature and film. His journey began with a deep love for poetry and music, nurtured during his school days and further enriched by attending concerts of legends like Ravi Shankar. After his family moved to Amritsar post-Partition, Gulzar pursued his dreams in Bombay, working as a garage mechanic while writing poetry. His film career started as an assistant to Bimal Roy, eventually leading to his first song, “Mora Gora Ang Lai Le” in Bandini (1963).
Gulzar’s directorial debut came with Mere Apne (1971), followed by critically acclaimed films like Parichay (1972) and Koshish (1972). He formed a remarkable partnership with actor Sanjeev Kumar, resulting in classics like Aandhi (1975) and Mausam (1975). His versatility extended to television with the beloved series Mirza Ghalib and contributions to popular shows like Jungle Book.
Honored with numerous awards, including National Awards and an Academy Award for “Jai Ho” from Slumdog Millionaire (2008), Gulzar has also authored many books, showcasing his talent in poetry, short stories, and children’s literature.
